SALVATION
ENTERING THE NEW COVENANT
Preach the Word by Bishop Charles L. Middleton, Sr. (pages 65-69)
Biblical References: Hebrews 6:1-2, Romans 10:8-10, Acts 2:38-47.
Exactly what one must do in order to appropriate the full provision of New Covenant salvation is a hotly debated issue; however, we believe that the Scriptures are clear on this point. In several New Testament references (all of which must be taken into consideration), we learn that full New Covenant salvation involves being:
A. Rescued from this present evil world order (Galatians 1:4).
B. Re-established in the kingdom of God's beloved Son (Colossians 1:13).
C. Immersed in water in the Name of the Lord, Jesus Christ, after receiving the Word (Acts 2:22-36,38).
D. Filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17).
E. Added to a local assembly of New Covenant believers (Acts 2:14).
Obviously, anyone who fails (for whatever reason) to satisfy all of these Biblical requirements cannot be walking in the full light of the New Covenant.
Now, we believe there are six clearly stated Scriptural steps that one must take in order to enter fully into God's salvation.
1. First of all there's the matter of REPENTENCE FROM DEAD WORKS. The New Testament meaning of the word "metanoeo" suggests a radical change of mind that follows consideration and regret. It involves a change of direction and action (cp. Matthew 21:28-41; Matthew 3:1-10; Luke 3:9-14; John 16:7-9).
2. The next requirement is FAITH TOWARD GOD. The content of this faith is given in Romans 10:9 and I Corinthians 15:1-4.
3. The Scriptures are moreover clear that one must make a verbal confession of the LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST in order to be saved (Romans 10:8-9).
4. Acts 2:38 is but one Scriptural proof that WATER BAPTISM (IMMERSION) IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST is a foundational New Covenant truth.
5. The next step leading into fullness of New Covenant salvation is variously called THE BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT, the infilling of the Holy Spirit or the promise of the Father. However one refers to this element of New Covenant initiation, all must agree that this is a necessary experience (Ephesians 5:18; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 19:6).
6. Finally, we don't believe that any Christian can experience much of the New Covenant life and ministry without being a part of a local community of born again believers.
The undeniable testimony of the Book of Acts is:
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls...And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved (Acts 2:41, 47b).
Here we see the Lord building His church. The "saved" are the "living stones" which He "adds" to the stones that are already in the building. Therefore, those who gladly received the word and were baptized not only came into a saving relationship with the Father, but they were moreover divinely "added" to their fellow Covenant brothers and sisters to become vital members of the Redeemed Community. Stated differently, they were added to the Lord and to each other (Acts 5:14, 11:24).
The following simple prayer may be said verbally for those that wish to be saved and want to have a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come to you now, in the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ, recognizing my need of your great salvation. I repent of the sin of unbelief and renounce all rebellion and ungodliness in my life. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins. I believe that He was buried, and that He arose from the dead. I moreover, believe that He is enthroned at the right hand of the Majesty on high as King of kings and Lord of lords right now. According to God's Holy Word, I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord. I say, Jesus is my Lord, I own Him now as my King and I call upon Him to save me as He has promised. Now, by faith I give you thanks, dear Jesus, for saving me and making me your child. AMEN.
